Where BikeRowSki Sits in the Fitness World

Understanding the Different Ways People Experience Exercise

The fitness industry has never offered more choice. From boutique studios and strength gyms to running clubs, commercial gyms and personal training, there’s something for almost everyone. But not everyone is looking for the same experience.

Some people thrive on chasing numbers and pushing metric limits. Others simply want to move more, feel healthier and enjoy the experience.

At BikeRowSki, we’ve always believed there should be space for both.

The Fitness Lovers

For some, fitness is a huge part of their identity — it’s attached to their lifestyle. They enjoy improving their performance, tracking every workout, and seeing measurable progress over time. Metrics are motivating for this group. They provide feedback and help shape the experience.

The Larger Majority

For others, exercise serves a different purpose. They know exercise matters, but life is busy and priorities are different. They need somewhere welcoming — somewhere that helps them feel healthier, more confident and more energised.

They’re less concerned with numbers and more interested in how they feel when they leave.

Neither approach is right or wrong. They’re simply different reasons for moving — and BikeRowSki was designed to bring both types of people together rather than separate them.

Where BikeRowSki Actually Sits

We are not a performance gym, and we are not a drop-in cardio room either. BikeRowSki sits deliberately between the two: structured, coached sessions on bikes, rowers and skiers, programmed so that a complete first-timer and a former athlete can do the same class side by side without either of them having a bad experience.

That is harder to do than it sounds. Most group formats solve the problem by picking a side. Either the session is built around the fittest person in the room and everyone else hangs on, or it is built around the newest person and anyone experienced quietly gets bored. We solve it differently, by changing what we measure.

Why These Machines Make It Possible

Bikes, rowers and ski ergs are unusually democratic pieces of equipment. They are low impact, they do not demand a learned skill before you can get value out of them, and the effort is entirely self-selected — the machine only gives back what you put in. Two people can move at the same rate for the same length of time and have completely different experiences of it, and both experiences are equally valid.

That is why our classes are built around rate and time rather than pace and distance. It keeps the room together visually while leaving intensity entirely in your hands. We have written more about why we coach rate over pace and time over distance if you would like the detail.

Who Tends to Enjoy It

In practice, the people who get the most out of BikeRowSki are the ones who want the structure and atmosphere of a class without the comparison that usually comes with it. That tends to include:

  • People returning to exercise after a long gap, or after an injury
  • Runners and cyclists looking for low-impact conditioning that does not wreck them
  • Anyone who has held a gym membership and quietly stopped going
  • Members who would rather be coached than left to figure it out alone
  • People who already train hard and want a session that is not a test

If you recognise yourself in more than one of those, that is completely normal — most of our members move between them depending on the month they are having.

What we are aiming for underneath all of it is set out in what BikeRowSki stands for, and if you are brand new, support for beginners and returning members answers most of the practical questions.

Not sure which camp you’re in? Book a class and find out — most people are a bit of both.
