How to Train When You’re Drained

How to Train When You’re Drained: We’ve All Had Those Days

You wake up feeling flat. Work has been relentless. The kids kept you awake. Your motivation has disappeared, and the thought of a workout feels more exhausting than energising.

The good news? Learning how to train when you’re drained doesn’t mean choosing between giving 100% or doing nothing.

At BikeRowSki, we believe that showing up is often the biggest victory. Some days you’ll want to push for more metres, and other days you’ll simply move your body for 45 minutes. Both are equally valuable.

Not Every Workout Has to Be Your Best

One of the biggest myths in fitness is that every session needs to leave you feeling like you should be lying on the floor, completely exhausted. In reality, your body doesn’t perform at the same level every day, and that’s perfectly normal – as we explore in why harder workouts aren’t always better.

Sleep, stress, nutrition, work, family life and even the weather can all affect how you feel. Training is about consistency, not perfection.

The people who make fitness a lifelong habit aren’t the ones who smash every workout. They’re the ones who keep turning up, even when they don’t feel at their best.

Give Yourself Permission to Pull Back

One of the things we’re most proud of at BikeRowSki is that every workout is designed to meet you where you are.

Whether you’re an experienced athlete or stepping into your very first class, every session can be adjusted to suit where you’re at. Feeling drained? That might mean:

  • Reducing your pace.
  • Taking longer recoveries.
  • Lowering your damper setting.
  • Focusing on smooth, controlled movement.
  • Ignoring the numbers and simply enjoying the session at the prescribed rates.

None of that means you’ve failed. It means you’ve trained intelligently.

Movement Creates Energy

It might sound backwards, but gentle exercise often helps when you’re feeling mentally tired.

While a hard session can sometimes be too much after a stressful day, moderate exercise increases blood flow, boosts mood and releases endorphins that help reduce stress and improve energy levels.

Many members arrive telling us they nearly cancelled. Forty-five minutes later, they leave feeling lighter, happier and glad they came. The workout didn’t drain them – it helped refill the tank.

Listen to Your Body, Not Your Ego

There’s an important difference between being tired and being exhausted.

Feeling a little low on energy? A lighter workout could be exactly what your body needs. Recovering from illness, carrying an injury or completely run down? Rest may be the smarter option.

Fitness isn’t about pushing through every warning sign. It’s about making good decisions over weeks, months and years. The smartest athletes know when to push – and when to recover.

There Is No Judgement Here

One of the reasons our community is so special is that everyone remembers what it felt like to start.

In every BikeRowSki class you’ll find people of different ages, different fitness levels and different goals. Some are training for endurance events. Some want to lose weight. Some are rebuilding confidence after injury. Others simply want to move more and feel healthier. That’s the same supportive environment we describe in how we create a safe, supportive gym environment.

Nobody is comparing your workout to theirs. Our coaches certainly aren’t. They’re there to encourage you, help you adjust your workout to suit how you’re feeling that day, and celebrate the fact that you’ve shown up.

The Best Workout Is the One You Can Repeat

Long-term health isn’t built in one incredible workout. It’s built through hundreds of ordinary ones.

Some sessions you’ll surprise yourself. Some you’ll simply tick the box. Both count.

At BikeRowSki, we believe fitness should fit around real life, not the other way around. There will always be days when you’re full of energy and ready to attack the workout. There will also be days when just walking through the door feels like an achievement.

On those days, remember this: reduce effort if you need to, choose the lighter dumbbell if you need to, rest if your body genuinely needs it. But never underestimate the power of simply showing up.

Because every session, no matter the pace, is another step towards a healthier, happier you.

Feeling drained today? Book a class anyway – your coach will scale it to meet you exactly where you’re at.
